Microsoft XP: - Embedded WMV playback issues... any theories?

Can someone tell me why object WMV clips embedded inside web pages suddenly
stopped working for me recently?

Where I once saw seemless video playback on webpages (such as
www.unfaith.net/pages/hoax), I now see a white box with the playback options
(stop, play, volume, etc) all mixed up at the TOP of the white box. Nothing
plays, and neither the play nor stop buttons are pressable. The volume
slider seems to be operational though.

Viewing the page source, localizing the movie filename and playing it
directly in WMP works.

In other words, WMV video playback within IE seems to be completely
corrupted... not on one site, but each one of them using embedded WMV clips.

I tried re-installing IE SP1, then WMP 9, and just installed XP SP2 hoping
it might help... tested between each... and walked away 0 in 3. Problem
persists.

Could spyware or malware be the culprit? What are your theories?
