Does delete partition on external drive erase data saved
on the drive even though there was an error message "Your
computer's startup program cannot gain access to the disk
containing the partition or free space you choose. Set up
cannot install Windown XP on this hard drive."

If one were to delete a partition, all data residing on that partition
would be deleted/erased. If you are attempting to install Windows XP
on an external drive, that cannot be done. Windows XP must be installed
on an internal drive.
