Microsoft XP: Delete XP and Install windows 98

10gig computer is so slow with XP. Want to change to win98 but have no A
drive for floppy boot up disc. Computer is not connected to the internet. Can
I use the XP disc to delete XP and reformat then before XP starts to install
put the Win 98 disc in thus by passing the need for the boot up floppy. The
files were set to FAT32 and boot from CD. ROM was selected when Xp was
installed.

Why don't you try a Knoppix Live CD. It can do all that stuff for you. Go
here or do a Google Search

Boot from your XP CD and you will be given the opportunity to
delete the partition[s] during setup, you don't have to format at
this point as the win98 setup can do it .

It does seem a bit drastic -XP is so much more stable than 98. 10gb should
be workable provided you uninstall unused stuff.

Have you tried adding some ram?

Um, if the computer is too slow for XP, it is DEFINATELY too slow for
knooppix 4.0. Version 3.6 is better for a slow box. But it still will
want about 256MB of RAM.

Just make sure you have all the needed drivers for the computer
before you take the plunge. More and more places have decided to
delete their Win98 drivers or no longer provide versions of software
that will run on Win98.

I've been going through that with Hp, Intel and Zone Alarm, to name
a few, in the last few days.

The guy who used to supply me with all my oddball cables had some
very wise advice, "If you want things to be easier to get working,
don't have too great a difference in age between your hardware and
the age of your software." He is gone now and thus wasn't able to
keep me out of trouble this time, but I think I will modify his
advice to add "and don't have too great a difference between the
age of either and the current date on the calendar." That doesn't
say you can't get it to work, but you may need to work harder.

I finally found a book in the library with a CD with a version of
ZoneAlarm that was just old enough to still support Win98. The
drivers, that I'm still working on.

That is interesting because I am using the latest version of Zone Alarm
on my 98SE system.
